July 2010 - “Tamar” Sea turtle project
Not far from Ilha do Guajirú, only appr. 6 km far, Ceará’s famous sea turtle project, called “Tamar” is found.
The project Tamar exists in 9 states of Brazil and one of them is Almofala, through which appr. 1100 km of coastline is protected.
Here, in a lovely ecological setting, nearby the sea and right into the Dunes, you will be able to enjoy a completely different day the windsurfing or kiting…
Here, you see what Ecologics on and near Ilha do Guajirú is all about!
See how Brazil’s has started to also respect wildlife, promotes and supports the growing, caring and multiplication of sea turtles.
The centre is worth a visit for sure and is very educative and teaching!
Various interesting species are kept in different basins and pools, while you can walk between all of the and watch them from nearby.
If you happen to have no car at the island, it’s the easiest to get there by contacting Falk Fuhrmann of the Tourist Office, he will be able to organize the trip for you!
Route and getting there:
From Ilha do Guajirú head to Itarema, then take directions to Almofala (direction East, following the coastline, or upwind for all watersporters J), follow the road that goes left in front of the centre’s fuel station.
The continue for appr. 5 km till you arrive at Almofala, where you recognize the centre and square by it’s white, recently renovated beautiful church (worth a visit!).
Continue little more till you see a sign at your left hand side marked TAMAR.
After some nice dune and lagoon road you will get at a small Dune Cabana, the project’s parking.
